About The Visit
Making dramatic gains in literacy results requires structural and cultural change, initiated by school leadership and adopted by the entire school community. In its fourth year under the leadership of principal Carland Washington, West Prep Academy has prioritized two initiatives: first, its cross-curricular academic vocabulary curriculum (Word Generation) and second, a new model of parent engagement (APTT) that includes parents in an analysis of their child’s reading data and activities meant to strengthen key skills.
During this visit, participants will examine West Prep’s literacy vision and the leadership decisions made to support a comprehensive literacy program that led to significant DRP and state assessment growth. Visits to science classrooms will showcase how to incorporate Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary words in a Word Generation lesson using language acquisition strategies. To support teacher collaboration and professional learning, visitors will engage in grounding texts, student work inquiry, and action plan next steps. Through the APTT model, participants will learn how to share DRP data, extend Word Generation beyond the classroom, and data goal-setting activities with parents. West Prep’s leadership will share its journey about how to facilitate the shift from traditional parent-teacher teams to an APTT model that supports family engagement.
