About the School
Thurgood Marshall Academy for Learning and Social Change is a Title I middle school located in Central Harlem, Manhattan. The mission of the school is grounded in the belief that all children can learn and have the fundamental right to reach their fullest potential. The school is a member of the Middle School Quality Initiative (MSQI), a schoolwide comprehensive literacy program across 128 NYC schools that serve middle-grade learners with the common goal of graduating all 8th graders reading on or above grade level.
About the Visit
At this Showcase, visitors will learn about MSQI’s Framework and the research-based practices that are used to promote literacy in the middle grades. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about the implementation of the Word Generation curriculum, see strategies for making students’ thinking visible, and practice literacy inquiry using sample student work. At the end of the day, visitors will plan how to incorporate literacy strategies into their own work.
If you would like to preview some of the artifacts from Showcase Schools, you can find them here in this collection, which is organized alphabetically by the host school’s learning focus area.
